Be afraid

December 27, 2009

So after a bit of a Christmas break, we here at ACSC thought we would pass along a little treasure that was recently posted.

Courtesy of Dödselectro, we have these tracks from the ever rapidly rising producer, Fear of Tigers.

Fear of Tigers is probably a bit of a common name on the scene now, but only because he has pulled himself out of obscurity by making some consistently great stuff. His work has a great almost classic electronic feel to it that’s a bit dance and a bit mellow, but which never fails to get you moving in your seat. He has recently finished off his debut album ‘Cossus Snufsigalonica’ and has put it up for free to download and it works a great summary of his original stuff thus far. Be sure to grab it here.

He has recently put together a remix of Visage’s own ‘Fade to Grey’ which has really blown us away here at acsc, and can be heard running on a loop several times during the day.

[Visage - Fade To Grey (Fear of Tigers Remix)]

Besides that, he has had some of his own work remixed as well. Dödselectro explains:

“We once again hear from Mille that doesn’t need an introduction by now. We all know he is fucking beast. His own blend of ‘Sirkka’ is a synth orgie on a space shuttle during lift off where the universe is the limit. French duo Human Contact makes a heroic return with their wonderful full frontal disco version of ‘Adventures of Pippi Longstrump’ that blew me away, it differs a lot from their recent nu-rave tech sounds and my respect for these guys just increased. Simply amazing. I’m also introducing yet a norweigan called The Clean Shaven Grins, who with his slow building 8 minute electronica experiment makes your mind wander some place beautiful. So much love given right here, make sure you pay them back.”

[Fear of Tigers - Sirkka (Mille Remix)]

[FoT - The Adventures of.. (Human Contact Remix)]

[Fear of Tigers - Sirkka (The Clean Shaven Grins Remix)]

Hope that wets your appetite for now, we’ll have more stuff up closer to the New Year. 2010 is right around the corner so we’re hoping for some great new stuff to be coming out soon to celebrate the end of the decade. Be sure to check out FoT’s myspace below and throw that album onto your playlist immediately!

Local Round Up

December 15, 2009

We have a few bits to feature today. Bit of a delay in posting these so apologies to those who were waiting on it.

First up are some demo tracks from Stefan Conrad aka MidRaid straight out of Charlottetown. He’s been slowly building up his work in the scene for a bit now, and is currently working on full length album entitled “The Experiment”. Stefan says he has his roots in early techno, but these new tracks definitely show some advancement from there and have that great raw electronic sound reminiscent of some of the artists he’s inspired by; Justice, boys noize, and others. You can check out the two demo tracks over at his myspace, where he also has some great mixing videos showing the behind the scenes work, or you can download the tracks at the link below

I’d say that’s worth a bit of your time. Download link below, and be sure to check out his website for more of this type of work. A+

Finally we have another DJ from Charlottetown, known as Jakt, who is currently promoing some tracks which he has included in this demo mix. Jakt is another consistent poster over at EastCoastGroove and you can find some of his work there as well as on his myspace, linked below. Check out this tracklist for now:

Donairs – Jzz (squared edit)
Inert – Proekt36 (jakt’s hypnomix)
Jakt – Oubliette (original mix)
Donairs – Techno 58 (original mix)

I’m really digging his style and he has an interesting set of originals and his own mixes that makes this demo pretty great. Definitely highlights some greats bits of his work, so be sure to give it a download.

Episodes of Funk

December 9, 2009

We just wanted to quickly highlight what we thought was a cool website. Suave Assassins, based out of Vancouver, run an online podcast show of sorts that plays various mixes of funky drum and bass and other genres. Sporting a line-up of DJs with years of experience, they have some really great stuff to show off. As of now they have an impressive 75 episodes up on the site, with the earliest dating back to 2007. So if you got a few days to kill, definitely check out the Podcasts section of their website, scroll through the mix lists and see if you spot anything you like. Turn it up and just chill out. Be sure to check out the Artists page as well, and you’ll get a little profile on some of the DJs you’ll be listening to. Each artist also has a little sample bit you can download and listen to if you want to explore an individual’s work a bit more.

You can also catch some of their work over at Destroyer.net every Tuesdays at 10-12pm EST.

Besides that, must apologize about the delay. Been a bit hectic, but things are going smoothly now. Have some mixes we’ll be posting soon from local artists, so be sure to check back soon.

A pretty mellow mix overall with a great beat. Definitely something you can run on a loop for the better part of an afternoon.

Dezza, based out of Halifax, is a pretty well established artist by now with a couple of major labels under his belt. You can find some of his stuff on beatport if you’re so inclined or hop on over to his myspace for a bit of a bio low down and other preview tracks:

A nice mash-up of some brand names and more underground talent. Gramophonedzie is one group we’ve previewed on the site before and they continue to deliver that big bang sampling. Also love the transition into Smooth Criminal at the end and if you’re not up and dancing by then, nothing can be done for you.

KonfliKt has been getting around as of late, recently joined up with the Nightcap DJs from downtown, but could definitely still use some support. Be sure to check out some of these links:

As well, we just updated the About page. We’re looking for people in Moncton, Halifax, St. John’s, and other Maritime locations who can take photos of DJ shows and send them in to be posted. If you’re interested definitely send us an email!

Afghans and Noize

November 27, 2009

We have a couple of vimeo videos here for your Friday afternoon

The first, via The Fast Life, is an introduction to an awesome group known as the Afghan Raiders. I’ll let their bio bit do the talking:

The Las Vegas alt-electro marauders lock and load pulsating synth soundscapes with massive rock n’ roll melodies. The duo, Mikey and Beans, connect with audiences through each and every note. Songs like “Admiral’s Doorbell” slide from woozy cybernetic verses into hypnotically melodic choruses. Falling into Afghan Raiders’ strange embrace is easy during “Future Thinkers,” which breaks and bends kinetic keyboards into raw distortion. Afghan Raiders are dangerous enough to make you dance.

Mikey describes their enigmatic style best. “Our sound is a very unique blend of a few different genres,” he says. “There are elements of dance music, but there’s a sense of classic song structure. You can feel the rock and indie influences on the hooks.” Those hooks are what make tracks like “Solid Gold” so infectious. It’s easy to hum along with every buoyant groove. Beans adds, “Our music is upbeat and energetic, but it’s still dark. The songs are typically about overcoming something challenging. There’s an antagonist that needs to be conquered, but there’s always a positive, uplifting ending—then everyone just dances to the end result.”

Now via voulesrandom, we have this awesome video from Strip Steve entitled ‘Breakin’. A really great tune that will have you moving whether you’re sitting or standing, so be sure to check it out. Strip Steve these days can be found under the Boysnoize label, which is always a huge hit with us here at acsc

Our Favorites

November 25, 2009

Here are some mixes and original tracks that we’ve been enjoying recently

Tits & Clits – Pillpopper [Tommie Sunshine & Turbo P 'Brooklyn Fire' Remix]

Mix 7 – Smooth Fidgets

2009 10 mrfarts monkey

As well, via The Phoenix Loop

“Three tracks up for grabs here from my latest mix.  Peppered with horn and vocal samples from the early 20th, these have been in heavy rotation lately when I play out.  I never tire of seeing heads turn during both Why Don’t You and Save Us when the beat kicks out leaving nothing but the big band playing, only to kick back in with spliced, choppy awesomeness.”

Gramophonedzie – Why Don’t You?
Nadastrom – Save Us
Sandy Huner – Rare Tap (2000 and One cut)

Personally a fan of the big band sampling, and hope that starts coming back in some fashion. Definitely worth checking out these tracks.

Chilly Gonzales and ‘Waves’

November 25, 2009

via voulesrandom.

Play this on your way to work this morning and your day will radiate waves of intense analog stimulation courtesy of the genius Gonzales. Also included in the EP is a brief audio liner note for the song in the form of a Q+A. Pretty swell.

Buy it: [itunes] [DEEJAY] [roughtrade]

Great track and piano work, not quite what one would expect but he makes it work. Has a strange, intense pace to it that I really like. I hear this working well in potential remixes.
